Capitals Capture the Stanley Cup
Washington Defeats Vegas 4-1
After Years of Heartbreak, Ovechkin and the Capitals Finally Hoist Lord Stanley's
LAS VEGAS -- Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals put years of heartbreak behind them by winning the Stanley Cup for the first time in franchise history on Thursday night. The Capitals defeated the Vegas Golden Knights 4-1 in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final to clinch the franchise's first championship.
Ovechkin, the Capitals' captain and the NHL's leading scorer this season, scored the game-winning goal in the third period to give Washington a 3-1 lead. It was his 15th goal of the playoffs and his 7th in the Stanley Cup Final.
The Capitals' victory was a long time coming. The team had been to the Stanley Cup Final twice before, in 1998 and 2018, but lost both times. This year, the Capitals were determined to break through, and they did it in style. They won the first game of the series in Washington and then lost three straight games in Vegas. But they came back to win Game 5 in overtime and then won Game 6 in Washington to clinch the championship.
The Capitals' victory is a major accomplishment for the franchise and for Ovechkin, who is now one of the greatest players in NHL history. It is also a victory for the city of Washington, which has been waiting for a Stanley Cup冠军for more than 40 years.
