Lomachenko Suffers Eye Injury in Headbutt, Suspended by NYSAC

BREAKING NEWS

Oxon Hill, MD – Vasyl Lomachenko, one of the most successful amateur boxers of all time, sustained a cut left eye from an accidental headbutt in the fourth round of his fight against Jorge Linares at the MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland. Lomachenko, who has a record of 396 wins and 1 loss (with that loss avenged twice), has been suspended indefinitely by the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC).

Lomachenko, a Ukrainian former amateur boxer, won the Featherweight Olympic Gold medal and was awarded the prestigious Val Barker Trophy as the outstanding boxer of the 2012 Summer Olympics. His professional record currently stands at 17 wins, 3 losses, and 0 draws. Of those 17 wins, he has stopped 11 of his opponents.

The accidental headbutt occurred in the fourth round of the fight. Lomachenko was able to continue fighting, but the cut continued to bleed. The ringside doctor stopped the fight in the fifth round, and Lomachenko was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The NYSAC has suspended Lomachenko indefinitely pending a review of the incident. Lomachenko is expected to have surgery on his eye in the coming days.
