Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Dies at 74

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a pillar in the Houston community, passed away on July 19, 2024, at the age of 74.
A native of Jamaica, Queens, Lee dedicated her life to public service. She began her political career as a member of the Texas House of Representatives in 1989 and represented the 18th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1995.
As a member of Congress, Lee was a strong advocate for affordable healthcare, education, and justice reform. She served on three Congressional Committees, including the House Judiciary Committee and the House Committee on Homeland Security. Lee was also the Democratic Chief Deputy Whip.
Lee's passing has been met with an outpouring of grief from her colleagues, constituents, and friends. President Biden called her "a fearless champion for justice and equality" and former President Barack Obama said she was "a true leader and a tireless fighter for her community."
Celebrations are planned in Houston to honor Lee's legacy. She will be remembered as a tireless advocate for her community, a trailblazing politician, and a role model for generations to come.
