5.2-Magnitude Quake Rumbles Through Region

Residents Report Shaking, Minor Damage

A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Lamont, California on Tuesday night, causing widespread shaking throughout Southern California. The quake, which occurred at 10:33 p.m. PST, was centered about 15 miles (24 kilometers) north-northeast of Lamont and 10 miles (16 kilometers) west-northwest of Bakersfield, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The shaking was felt throughout the region, from Los Angeles to San Diego. Residents in the epicentral area reported strong shaking that lasted for several seconds. Minor damage was reported, including broken windows and cracked walls.

There were no immediate reports of injuries. The USGS issued a "yellow alert" for the quake, indicating that shaking was widely felt and that there is a low likelihood of significant damage.

The quake is the latest in a series of recent seismic events in Southern California. On Friday, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake rocked the region, causing widespread damage and power outages. Scientists are still investigating the relationship between the recent earthquakes.
